Here’s what to know:

The partnership aims to create a scalable and reliable digital infrastructure for CDR, essential for meeting the netzero goals of the Paris Agreement by scaling the industry to 10 Gt/year.

The collaboration combines real-time Internet of Things data with the requirements from an established Standard and a digital MRV system. This enables businesses to confidently invest in CDR, while CDR suppliers benefit from real-time insights into their projects, enhancing the management and quality assurance of their projects.

The partnership leverages the strengths of each organization involved. Puro.earth defines the data requirements to accurately assess the quality of the carbon removal project. Pyreg GmbH and SYNCRAFT then provide this essential data, such as pyrolysis temperature and water content of biochar. Carbonfuture gathers this data through its MRV+, providing it to suppliers for better delivery and inventory management, and to Puro.earth for certification and verification. Additionally, Carbonfuture markets verified CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) through its Marketplace.

Get the latest insights on the voluntary carbon market and learn more about an innovative financing approach to accelerate biochar carbon removals!

In the first half of December, the international climate community will meet in Dubai at COP 28 to discuss how to (still) meet the Paris Agreement. One essential solution are CO2 removal technologies to generate negative emissions.

Not all removals are equal – they differ in permanence, co-benefits and cost. Biochar offers high permanence, competitive costs and multiple co-benefits (e.g. waste reduction, renewable energy, sustainable farming).

To accelerate the scale-up of removals, robust and transparent voluntary carbon markets as well as innovative financing solutions are decisive.

PYREG launched the service, PYREG Climate Finance Solution (PCFS), with the mission to permanently remove over four million tonnes of carbon dioxide by 2050.

PCFS enables durable carbon removal at scale through biochar production from agricultural, forestry and municipal waste streams. With this solution, corporates can contribute to their climate targets while simultaneously accelerating biochar production. Through a pre-purchase of certified BCRs, PYREG machines are financed for agricultural businesses. PYREG will be the first company to implement a carbon leasing scheme for its carbonisation machines, enabling agricultural businesses to access revenues from the VCM. By doing this, PCFS creates a closed loop system for their customers whereby farmers can reduce their waste disposal and fertiliser spend, while improving their soil quality.

“With our PCFS project, together with Kita, we have significantly reduced the financing risk for BCR projects for customers and laid the foundations to dramatically increase the uptake of BCR technology. Now the doors are wide open for CDR offtakers and PYREG customers to optimally and rapidly utilise annual biomass residue potential regionally and contribute to achieving global climate targets by 2050. Through PCFS, we enable PYREG customers to benefit from our technology at a fraction of the purchase price.” – Jörg zu Dohna, CEO, PYREG

Kita and PYREG are working together to structure an innovative carbon insurance product to underpin this groundbreaking scheme, protecting offtake agreements from the risk of under-delivery of projected carbon credits. Kita’s flagship insurance product, Carbon Purchase Protection Cover, which protects financiers of forward-purchased carbon credits against under-delivery, will be implemented as part of the PCFS facility’s risk mitigation framework. Insurance acts as a stamp of confidence for prospective clients, enabling them to get the green light to invest in impactful CDR projects that have the potential to meet ambitious net zero targets. By offering an additional indication of due diligence and quality assessment, the provision of Kita’s insurance can help channel significant global capital towards PYREG’s innovative solution.

“Kita is committed to developing carbon insurance solutions that can underpin the growth of the most ambitious and impactful carbon removal projects. By reducing the risks involved in under-delivery of carbon credits, our insurance can support PYREG’s innovative biochar machinery leasing programme”. – Tom Merriman, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer, Kita

thyssenkrupp rothe erde is breaking new ground in climate protection: with a carbonization plant that is unique in this form in Germany to date, the company is taking a major step toward reducing CO2 with PYREG’s innovative NetZero technology.

In the carbonization plant, residual wood is carbonized in a pyrolysis process. This produces regenerative heat and biochar. “Our carbonization plant is unique in Germany in terms of its dimensions and is the first time negative emission technology has been integrated in a German industrial group,” explains Dr. Wilfried Spintig, COO at thyssenkrupp rothe erde. “We use the heat generated in the pyrolysis process for our production site in Lippstadt and can thus cover around 40% of our on-site heat requirements.” This renewable heat replaces previously fossil fuels. By way of comparison, the heat produced in the plant is equivalent to the annual demand of almost 300 households.
The feedstock used in Lippstadt is unprocessed and uncontaminated wood, consisting on the one hand of packaging residues and on the other of suitably dried green waste. Around 2,500 metric tons of residual wood are used annually to generate over 5,300 MWh of heat and around 640 metric tons of biochar, which is used among other things as a soil conditioner in agriculture. “thyssenkrupp rothe erde will be climate-neutral by 2050, and to achieve this we are also constantly looking for new ways to implement decarbonization at our company,” explains Wilfried Spintig. “This plant is also a pilot project for us and, in our eyes, can be a building block for a meaningful jump-start on the way to decarbonization for other industries as well.”

“Carbonization of biomass to produce Biochar for use in Regenerative Agriculture”

PYREG held its first Biochar symposium for Growers in the California Central Valley.
Why? Biomass residues are valuable materials! With PYREG NetZero Carbonization Systems, growers can transform their waste/residues into highly valuable Biochar. By applying the carbonization process, Growers achieve a Circular Economy, producing Biochar, while generating renewable energy and carbon credit certificates.
Biochar is extremely interesting for agriculture because its sponge-like structure stores water and nutrients, thus counteracting soil dehydration, improving soil health and increasing crop yields/quality.
Robert Kovach clearly explains how Biochar works. A lively interview. Take a look!

Swiss energy service provider IWB produces regenerative heat and CO2-absorbing biochar from green waste.

The Basel based IWB has realized the first climate-neutral district heating project in Switzerland. Using our newly developed PX1500, IWB is now feeding an annual heating capacity of around 1.5 gigawatt hours into the district heating network. That covers the energy needs of about 170 Basel households. IWB uses only regional, untreated biomass such as wood and green waste from a maximum radius of 40 kilometers. In the PYREG plant, this high-quality biomass is carbonized into biochar at 500 to 700 degrees Celsius in the absence of oxygen. In this biochar, CO2 is safely bound. Subsequently dispersed into the earth it ends up in a permanent carbon sink.

IWB sells premium biochar and closes the loop

Through the advanced temperature-controlled Pyreg carbonization, IWB produces a premium biochar certified as the internationally accepted “EBC-AgroBio“. That biochar complies with the requirements for EU-wide use as a soil conditioner – even in organic farming. IWB sells the biochar – ca. 550 metric tons per year – to both, agricultural enterprises, and private customers. By doing so, IWB is also setting new standards for circular economy in the municipal sector.

A flagship project

“IWB is a pioneer in climate protection and living proof of the enormous climate protection value that lies in CO2-negative district heating,” says Helmut Gerber, CTO and founder of PYREG GmbH, adding, “We are convinced that flagship projects like this one in Switzerland will follow worldwide. They are important as we have no more time to lose on the way to achieving the Paris climate protection goals.”
“With this, our first biochar plant IWB emphasizes our leading role as a service provider for renewable energy. Decarbonizing the heat supply is one of our most important tasks, and not just in Basel. We carry this mission throughout Switzerland. The plant is a showcase project in terms of decarbonization and energy efficiency. Also, our customers gain from the ecological benefits of the biochar,” says Dr. Arthur Janssen, Head of Strategy & Innovation at IWB.

PYREG Biochar from biosolids proves a negative global warming potential by a factor of 10 compared to conventional fertilizer.

In a 2019 study by the German Federal Environmental Agency, the result is that conventional fertilizer production in Germany emits about +1.2 kg CO2 eq/kg P2O5. Furthermore, phosphate recovery processes like precipitation (in digested sludge or centrate) or sewage sludge ash also demonstrably cause CO2 emissions.

In comparison to the global warming potential (GWP) of these processes, PYREG biochar from biosolids has a negative GWP of –4,01 kg CO2 eq / kg P2O5. Consequently, the recovery of phosphate within the PYREG process and the final application of the biochar contributes to fight global warming and reaching net zero.

In addition to that the phosphate recovery rate of PYREG biochar from biosolids is nearly 80 %, which is in the range of other thermal treatments and far better than precipitation processes with <40 % recovery rate.
