A Healthier Earth, a UK-based climate tech firm, has announced plans to build a major biochar facility in Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire. Partnering with PYREG, the facility will produce up to 9,000 tonnes of biochar per year, making it one of the largest carbon removal projects in the UK. This effort aims to capture and store around 17,000 tonnes of atmospheric CO2 annually, beginning in 2025.

Biochar, a carbon-rich material, is created through pyrolysis, which heats organic waste like biomass and sewage sludge to over 500°C in low-oxygen conditions. This process sequesters up to 90% of the carbon contained in the original plant material, preventing it from re-entering the atmosphere. The facility will use local organic waste, diverting it from landfills and incineration.

The biochar project will also generate carbon removal credits for sale, supporting global decarbonization efforts. A Healthier Earth plans to scale this operation with PYREG’s high-capacity PX6000 pyrolysis machines, with future expansions in mind.

This initiative is a significant step towards combating climate change, aligning with global goals to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C, as outlined in the Paris Agreement. With the capability to deliver large-scale carbon removal, this facility underscores the growing role of biochar in climate solutions.

WHAT ARE CARBON CREDITS?

A carbon credit is a tradeable unit representing the avoidance, reduction or removal of one metric ton of CO2e from the atmosphere. Organizations and individuals can use these credits to oset their greenhouse gas emissions, or excess credits can be sold on verified crediting platforms, creating an extra revenue stream.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

While often used interchangeably, carbon offsets and carbon credits operate on different processes and activities:

Carbon Offsets are an avoidance or prevention activity involving a reduction of CO2 or other greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere in order to compensate for emissions made elsewhere. Some examples are solar and wind power.

Carbon Credits are a removal activity involving a removal of CO2 or other greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere. Some examples are reforestation and biochar production. Companies or individuals who earn carbon credits can sell them to other organizations as carbon
osets to help oset their carbon footprint.

HOW DO CARBON CREDITS WORK?

Each carbon credit is treated as a unique and independently verified reduction of greenhouse gasses that must be traceable back to the specific carbon project that generated the emission reduction.

To qualify, the carbon project must be:

1. ADDITIONAL
The value of reductions must be beyond usual business practices.

2. REAL
Carbon reduction is measurable.

3. PERMANENT
The greenhouse gas removal is permanent and cannot be reversed.

4. REGISTERED
Each carbon credit is a unique, serialized and tracked unit that can be retired only once.

5. VERIFIED
An independent and qualified third party conducts a review of the project and certifies the emission reduction claim

WHAT PROJECTS QUALIFY FOR CARBON CREDITS?

Carbon offset and removal projects come in many forms and activities located all over the world, including:

Carbon and methane capture and sequestration

Emission reductions in industrial processes

Land use and reforestation

Returning biomass to the soil

Investing in renewable energy

Improving energy eciency

Switching to alternative fuel types

WHAT ORGANIZATIONS VERIFY CARBON CREDITS?

Qualifying carbon projects are governed and verified by independent GHG Registries, such as:

https://acrcarbon.org/
https://verra.org/
https://www.goldstandard.org/
https://www.climateactionreserve.org/
https://puro.earth/
https://www.carbonfuture.earth/
https://unfccc.int/

WHO’S BUYING AND SELLING CARBON CREDITS?

Carbon market allows investors and corporations to trade both Carbon Credits and carbon offsets simultaneously.

There are currently two different carbon markets:

Worldwide compliance market
Companies that are large emitters of greenhouse gasses and are subject to government regulations. They are allowed to use carbon offsets for a portion of an emission reduction commitment.

Voluntary carbon market (VCM)
Allows individuals and companies not under a compliance program the opportunity to sell carbon credits to earn revenue or buy carbon credits to oset their emissions.

CARBON CREDIT / OFFSET LIFECYCLE

1. PROJECT DEVELOPMENT, VALIDATION & REGISTRATION

Offset project is designed by a project developer, financed, then reviewed by an independent auditor

Audit paperwork is sent to a standards committee, which certifies the project if standards are met

Project is valued in terms of GHG reduction potential and co-benefits provided

2. CARBON OFFSET ISSUANCES

Project is verified annually

Carbon oset credits are issued based on verified quantity of CO2e GHG reductions

3. CARBON OFFSET TRADING / SALES

Once issued, offsets can be transferred and traded between third-parties

Purchaser does not necessarily use the offset

Offsets can be traded several times

4. CARBON OFFSET RETIREMENT

Offset holders must retire the offset in order to use them and claim the associated GHG reduction

An offset can only be retired once

WHAT ARE BIOCHAR CARBON CREDITS?

Biochar carbon credits represent a permanent sequestration (removal) of carbon from the atmosphere. Physically trapping carbon in a stable
form (carbon sink) provides a longer and stronger permanence and higher value than traditional avoidance or reduction activities. When it comes to assessing and valuing carbon credits earned from biochar production and sequestration, it’s essential to work with industry-recognized organizations to ensure that the carbon removal is measurable, reportable, and verifiable.

Four PYREG PX 1500 systems form the technical basis of the largest Carbon Removal Park of the German climate tech start-up Novocarbo

The German climate tech company Novocarbo has announced the kick-off for its largest Carbon Removal Park (CDR-Park) in Germany to date. The latest site of the Hamburg-based start-up, which uses the PYREG net-zero technology to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, produce biochar, and generate renewable energy, is being built in Bochum in collaboration with the municipal utility of the city. Stadtwerke Bochum is the first municipal utility in a major German city to use climate-neutral heat from biochar production to make its district heating network greener. This is already the second carbon removal park that Novocarbo is going to open in Germany on the basis of the PYREG carbonization technology.

Climate-neutral heat for 26,000 households

Stadtwerke Bochum will source regenerative heat from the Carbon Removal Park Bochum all year round, thereby making the district heating supply in Bochum with currently around 26,000 connected households greener. “We very much welcome Novocarbo’s involvement in Bochum and are happy to support innovative, pioneering companies and technologies as part of our partnerships. Novocarbo offers us the opportunity to broaden our heat generation portfolio and make it greener. The surplus energy generated in the pyrolysis process is fed directly into our district heating network. The project is therefore an important building block for the decarbonisation of district heating in Bochum,” explains Elke Temme, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Bochum Holding GmbH.

Four PYREG plants form technical basis of Carbon Removal Park

The Carbon Removal Park in Bochum will be built from the end of 2024 on a site belonging to USB Bochum GmbH (USB) in Markstraße. By using four PX1500 pyrolysis plants from PYREG, around 6,000 tonnes of CO2 will be removed from the atmosphere, 15,000 MWh of climate-neutral heat will be generated, and 3,300 tonnes of biochar will be produced on an area of 4,500 m² from mid-2025. Novocarbo is investing around 14 million euros in the new site in Bochum. The start-up plans to open around 200 Carbon Removal Parks by 2033.

Caspar von Ziegner, CEO Novocarbo: “Our goal is to accelerate the economy‘s transition to Net Zero and to support companies in decarbonising with our green heat solution. Together with Stadtwerke Bochum, we can make a valuable contribution to climate neutrality in Germany in one of its most densely populated metropolitan regions.”

PYREG supplies Net Zero technology for the Black Bull Biochar project to eliminate greenhouse gases

The market-leading Biochar Carbon Removal technology turns woodchip residues into CO2-binding premium biochar and generates renewable energy at an industrial site in Redcliffe, Manchester.

PYREG, the European market leader in high-tech plant engineering for the production of biochar, is now entering the UK market, supplying a carbonization plant to Black Bull Biochar (BBB), a UK start-up company, for an industrial site in Radcliffe, Manchester, in the north of England.

Pioneering technology in the field of CO2 removal through carbonization of biomass residues, PYREG plants produce high quality premium biochar while providing renewable energy. By utilizing this excess process heat, the systems support and accelerate the transition to renewable energy by replacing fossil fuels. In addition, biochar stores the carbon sequestered in the biogenic residues in the soil for several thousand years, enabling carbon credits. These can be credited on platforms such as Puro.earth (Nasdaq).

BBB is a greenhouse gas removal start-up based in the United Kingdom. BBB is developing a viable, commercial biochar product for agriculture at its industrial site in Northern England, which will initially be used in the dairy industry. This can remove a significant amount of carbon from the atmosphere, which is stored in farm soils for centuries, while improving soil quality and reducing emissions on farms.

“PYREG and BBB are closing loops by producing high quality biochar and renewable energy while removing CO2 from the atmosphere. This is a real beacon project, and we are proud to provide the technology. It doesn’t get any better than this!”, says Jörg zu Dohna, CEO of PYREG.

“The biochar market in the UK is fragmented and nascent. BBB are building and expanding a sustainable biochar network of farms and industrial sites from scratch, overcoming barriers to entry. This can only be achieved if we help great manufacturers like PYREG entering new markets.” says Alex Clarke, Co-founder and CEO of Black Bull Biochar. And he adds: “This is a turning point in the UK biochar industry. This is the first time Pyreg have supplied a unit to the UK. BBB have trailblazed that entry route for them and we intend to help Pyreg scale up their presence in this market”.

BBB secured funding through the Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP) from the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) after achieving success in the final round of the Direct Air Capture (DAC) & Greenhouse Gas Removal (GGR) innovation competition.

PYREG launched the service, PYREG Climate Finance Solution (PCFS), with the mission to permanently remove over four million tonnes of carbon dioxide by 2050.

PCFS enables durable carbon removal at scale through biochar production from agricultural, forestry and municipal waste streams. With this solution, corporates can contribute to their climate targets while simultaneously accelerating biochar production. Through a pre-purchase of certified BCRs, PYREG machines are financed for agricultural businesses. PYREG will be the first company to implement a carbon leasing scheme for its carbonisation machines, enabling agricultural businesses to access revenues from the VCM. By doing this, PCFS creates a closed loop system for their customers whereby farmers can reduce their waste disposal and fertiliser spend, while improving their soil quality.

“With our PCFS project, together with Kita, we have significantly reduced the financing risk for BCR projects for customers and laid the foundations to dramatically increase the uptake of BCR technology. Now the doors are wide open for CDR offtakers and PYREG customers to optimally and rapidly utilise annual biomass residue potential regionally and contribute to achieving global climate targets by 2050. Through PCFS, we enable PYREG customers to benefit from our technology at a fraction of the purchase price.” – Jörg zu Dohna, CEO, PYREG

Kita and PYREG are working together to structure an innovative carbon insurance product to underpin this groundbreaking scheme, protecting offtake agreements from the risk of under-delivery of projected carbon credits. Kita’s flagship insurance product, Carbon Purchase Protection Cover, which protects financiers of forward-purchased carbon credits against under-delivery, will be implemented as part of the PCFS facility’s risk mitigation framework. Insurance acts as a stamp of confidence for prospective clients, enabling them to get the green light to invest in impactful CDR projects that have the potential to meet ambitious net zero targets. By offering an additional indication of due diligence and quality assessment, the provision of Kita’s insurance can help channel significant global capital towards PYREG’s innovative solution.

“Kita is committed to developing carbon insurance solutions that can underpin the growth of the most ambitious and impactful carbon removal projects. By reducing the risks involved in under-delivery of carbon credits, our insurance can support PYREG’s innovative biochar machinery leasing programme”. – Tom Merriman, Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer, Kita

We are thrilled to be recognized as the first technology partner of Puro.earth, the world’s leading crediting platform for engineered carbon removal.

Our high-tech carbonization machines (50+ in the global market) have gained industry recognition for their ability to produce high-quality biochar that meets the stringent eligibility requirements set by the Puro Standard for CO₂ Removal Certificates (CORCs).
We are excited to offer biochar producers the opportunity to monetize their carbon removal operations by leveraging the credibility and integrity of the Puro Standard. Through their Puro Accelerate program, Puro.earth further enables biochar producers to secure funding for their projects in development. Together, we aim to foster the expansion of carbon removal initiatives.

We look forward to collaborating with Puro.earth to advance the adoption of biochar as a powerful solution for carbon removal and the mitigation of climate change.

*Carbon removal activities will still need to be verified before they can be issued into CORCS under the Puro Standard.

(Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung vom 9.
